You need to save this recipe for Ramadan!
This Date Muhalabieh is creamy, rich, naturally sweet, and so easy to make. It’s a delicious twist on traditional muhalabieh, made with Medjool dates instead of added sugar.
Dates bring natural sweetness and nutrients, while the milk gives this dessert its silky, pudding-like texture. It’s a lovely treat to enjoy after iftar or after Taraweeh prayers when you’re craving something sweet.
And the best part? No added sugar — just the natural sweetness of dates!
A little warning: this dessert is quite rich, so a small serving goes a long way!

Ingredients
- 12-14 medjool dates
- 2 cups hot milk
- 2 cups room temperature milk
- 2 tbs cornstarch
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon, ground
- 1/2 tsp cardamom, ground
- 1 tsp vanilla
- Topping: coconut and pistachio
Instructions
- Soften the dates. Remove the pits from the dates and place them in a bowl. Pour the 2 cups of hot milk over them and let soak for about 10 minutes, or until the dates are soft.
- Blend until smooth. Transfer the dates and soaking milk to a blender and blend until completely smooth. Add the remaining 2 cups of room-temperature milk and blend briefly to combine.
- Add the remaining ingredients. Pour the date mixture into a saucepan. While the mixture is still cold, whisk in the cornstarch, cinnamon, cardamom, and vanilla extract until everything is fully incorporated and no lumps remain.
- Cook until thickened. Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, whisking continuously, until the mixture thickens into a smooth, creamy pudding. Avoid letting it scorch on the bottom.
- Pour and chill. Divide the mixture among individual serving cups or small bowls. Let cool slightly, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until fully set and chilled.
- Garnish and serve. Sprinkle with shredded coconut and chopped pistachios just before serving. Enjoy this naturally sweet, creamy dessert with your loved ones!
Notes & Tips
- Choose soft Medjool dates. They blend more easily and give the pudding its delicious natural sweetness.
- Whisk the cornstarch into the cold mixture. This helps prevent lumps from forming.
- Keep whisking while cooking. Continuous stirring helps the pudding thicken evenly and keeps it silky smooth.
- Adjust the sweetness naturally. If you prefer a sweeter dessert, add a few extra dates to the blender.
- Make it ahead. Prepare it the night before Ramadan gatherings so it has plenty of time to chill and set.
A simple, nourishing, and delicious dessert to share during the blessed month of Ramadan.
