Chai Muhammadi | شاي محمدي

There’s something so comforting about a pot of fragrant tea steeping on the stove, filling the kitchen with the delicate aroma of roses, warm cardamom, and cinnamon. Chai Muhammadi is a beautiful blend of black tea and aromatic botanicals, elevated with precious saffron threads for a wonderfully fragrant, warming cup.

The dried Muhammadi rosebuds bring a delicate floral note, the cardamom adds warmth and depth, and the cinnamon ties everything together. It’s the kind of tea you prepare slowly, keep on hand, and serve to family and friends whenever you want to offer a little warmth and hospitality.

This homemade blend is easy to prepare and makes a lovely tea to enjoy throughout the day.

Ingredients

  • 1 tea cup dried Muhammadi rosebuds
  • 20 cardamom pods
  • 1 large cinnamon stick
  • 1 teaspoon saffron threads (Persian or Afghan)
  • 1 tea cup black tea leaves

Instructions

1. Grind the spices and rosebuds.

Add the Muhammadi rosebuds, cardamom pods, cinnamon stick broken into smaller pieces, and saffron threads to a spice grinder. Pulse in short bursts until everything reaches a medium grind. Alternatively, use a mortar and pestle to crush the ingredients by hand.

The goal is a coarse, aromatic blend rather than a fine powder. Avoid over-grinding, as you want the individual ingredients to retain some texture.

2. Add the black tea.

Transfer the ground spice mixture to a bowl. Add the black tea leaves and gently mix until everything is evenly distributed.

3. Store the tea blend.

Transfer the finished blend to a clean, dry, airtight jar. Store in a cool, dark place away from moisture and direct sunlight to preserve its fragrance and flavor.

4. Brew your Chai Muhammadi.

Add 1–2 teaspoons of the tea blend per cup of freshly boiled water, adjusting the amount to your preference. Allow it to steep for 3–5 minutes, or longer for a stronger brew. Strain into your favorite teacup and enjoy.

Sweeten with sugar or honey if desired, or serve it plain to fully appreciate the delicate floral notes and warm spices.
